How is CBD Different from THC

Before we dive into what THC and CBD are and what they do, let’s look into where they come from first. THC and CBD can both be found in cannabis and hemp plants. Hemp and cannabis are both the same species of plants and have been grown for thousands of years around the world. Hemp has been a source of biofuel, oil, fiber, and food for many years. Cannabis has been used for its recreational uses for thousands of years and is often associated with potential benefits for a variety of health conditions. A variety of states have adopted medical cannabis programs. While they are both different varieties of the same plant, Hemp and Cannabis, they contain different amounts of CBD and THC. They are used differently as a result. THC and CBD share a similar chemical structure, they do not have the same effects on the body. 

What is THC?

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is most commonly associated with its psychoactive effects. THC binds to receptors that control things like pain and mood. THC can make individuals feel euphoric and give a “high”. 

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. CBD is non-intoxicating and is generally used to aid the body against issues such as nausea and pain. While scientific studies have not confirmed CBD’s usefulness for these conditions, available evidence suggests that CBD works with a signaling network in the body called the “endocannabinoid system” (ECS). According to Harvard University, “The ECS regulates and controls many of our most critical bodily functions such as emotional processing, sleep, temperature control, pain control, inflammatory and immune responses, and eating.”

How do they differ?

CBD does not cause the same “high” that THC causes, instead CBD is thought to work through other elements that are linked to feelings of well-being.

How are they similar?

Both CBD and THC have been shown to help individuals manage sleep troubles and physical pain.
